A brief history

The Australian National University (ANU) was established in 1946 to address Australia’s post-war requirements for advanced research and higher-level education. It was founded through a Federal Parliament Act with the purpose of having a lasting impact on the nation. The institution rapidly adopted the principles and customs of a world-class research university and has continued to expand and evolve since then. In 1960, the integration of Canberra University College into ANU marked the admission of undergraduates for the first time. Presently, ANU is renowned for its outstanding achievements in both research and education, and it has played a vital role in advancing research and providing specialized training at a postgraduate level within Australia. The university commemorated its 75th anniversary in 2021.

Its inception in 1946 was mandated by an Act of the Federal Parliament, driven by the nation’s post-war demand for advanced research and higher-level education. Its origins can be traced back to the formation of Canberra University College in 1929, which later merged with ANU in 1960, marking the university’s inclusion of undergraduate programs.

Eligibility Criteria

  • For undergraduate programs, ANU generally requires applicants to have completed their senior secondary studies or one year of an Australian undergraduate degree.
  • International applicants are required to have a minimum GPA of 5.0 and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or above.
  • ANU requires a minimum TOEFL score of 68 on the internet-based test (iBT), with a minimum score of 18 in the writing section

Fee Structure

Application Fee: 70 AUD for early-bird applicants and 125/ 200 AUD for standard applicants

For Domestic Students:

  • Most undergraduate programs in 2023: AUD 11,155 per semester (AUD 22,310 per year).

For International Students:

  • Most undergraduate programs in 2023: AUD 47,880 per semester (AUD 95,760 per year).

Additional Fees:

  • Students may have to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which is AUD 308 per year in 2023.

Financial Assistance:

  • ANU offers scholarships and financial aid programs to support students.
    Eligible students can benefit from government financial aid programs like HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP, deferring tuition fee payment until a specific income is earned.

Admission Deadlines

  • Semester 1, 2024 applications open on 14 March 2023.
  • Semester 2, 2024 applications open on 1 June 2023.

Notable alumni

Bob Hawke, who held the position of the 23rd Prime Minister of Australia from 1983 to 1991, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952 and a Bachelor of Letters degree in 1953 from the Australian National University (ANU). He has emphasized that his years at ANU were pivotal in his intellectual and political development and even served as the President of the ANU Students' Association in 1952.
