The Free University of Berlin is known for being tuition-free. Since 2003, public universities in Berlin introduced the model of semester contributions (Semesterbeiträge). It consists of an enrollment/re-registration fee, a contribution to the student union (Studentenwerk), a contribution for the student government, and the fee for the semester ticket (public transportation pass) for the current semester.
