A brief history

The University of Freiburg, officially known as the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, traces its origins back to 1457 when it was established by the Habsburg dynasty. It became the second university in Austrian-Habsburg territory after the University of Vienna. Despite facing financial challenges, the university managed to sustain itself until the regency of Ludwig I, Grand Duke of Baden, in 1818. In 1820, Ludwig I provided vital support with an annual contribution, ensuring the university’s survival. In gratitude for this assistance, the university and the citizens of Freiburg renamed it Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg (Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg)

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for admission to the University of Freiburg varies depending on the course and the level of study. Here are some general requirements:

International students pay fees of 1,500 euros per semester under § 3 Paragraph 1 LHGebG. Regular semester fees (currently 180 euros per semester) are also required.
