A brief history

On March 28, 1919, the University of Hamburg was established by the Hamburg Parliament, marking its distinction as the inaugural university in Germany founded through democratic means. The university’s origins trace back to the Akademisches Gymnasium, which operated from 1613 to 1833, as well as the “general lecture series” that facilitated the intellectual growth of Hamburg’s residents by offering public lectures covering a diverse array of subjects. The university officially commenced its operations on May 10, 1919, and commemorated its centenary anniversary in 2019.
